10 Things to Avoid in College

Hey guys!

Hopefully you're all having a great Friday! A couple days ago, I was sitting in my dorm room thinking about what I could blog about next. So, I asked my friend Lelia what she thought. We decided that it would be useful to post what things a college student should avoid...

#1
 Procrastination
If you put off doing your work until late at night, the quality will definitely decrease. Stay on top of your assignments so your grades stay up- that's what you're here for!

#2
Skipping Class
Well, how are you going to learn anything if you don't go to class?! Obviously don't go if you're sick or something along those lines, but make sure to talk to your professor and make up the work that you missed.

#3
Going to bed at 2am (or just too late in general)
On weeknights this is a no-no. Falling asleep in class, or even just zoning out because of exhaustion is not a good way to retain information.

#4
Going home every weekend
Going home is nice once in a while, but going too often means missing out on everything here at campus...get out and have fun! It's more difficult to adjust if you're constantly heading home for the weekend.

#5
Keeping your door closed
Some might think this just applies to the first couple weeks. Really though, even after a month here, it's still a good idea to keep your door open...people will walk in and be social :)

#6
Too much Facebook
I'll admit, I do devote a little too much time to Facebook. The problem with this is that when you're constantly online, that's taking away from study time or time that you could be spending with your friends. (homework + Facebook = fail.)

#7
Too much TV or video games
This is basically the same thing as Facebook, it's a distraction. Go get your homework done and then go outside and play frisbee...it's a lot more fun.

#8
Living your life on Skype
Skype is great for seeing your family/friends from home, but being in a video chat with someone else all the time means less time with the people who are actually here. There has to be some balance!

#9
Taking the buffet a little too seriously
We've all heard of it- the freshman 15. Beware!

#10
Not taking advantage of everything SMC has to offer
Saint Mike's has SO much to offer us as students...clubssportsMOVE, you name it! Check out the student activities page here.

How to: Be Creative with Your Dorm Room

Hi guys!

So this post isn't exactly going to be a "how to," it's more of a recap of what my roommate and I have been doing the past 2 days to make our dorm room unlike any other! You may think we're a little crazy, but hey, isn't that what makes it fun? :)

In order to complete our "renovation," we had to work through a series of steps:

Step 1- Find inspiration

Kristen's t-shirt!

Step 2- Get the necessary supplies

poster board (not pictured), scissors & a LOT of duct tape

Cardboard boxes!

Step 3- Build the foundation

Devan taping up some pieces of cardboard...

The "foundation" completed!

Step 4- Finish the basic construction

(Below the blue and green paper pictured below is more cardboard...for support, of course!)

Step 5- DECORATE!

Beginning to put up the finishing touches...

Drawing of a tree on the side when walking into the room!

The "tunnel" all finished!!!

Welcome Back Bash!

Hey everyone!

First off, I've been so super extremely busy this week, which is why it's taken me this long to update my blog! Who would have thought that there would be this much work in college? - haha, joking! :)

So, this weekend was the "Welcome Back Bash" which meant a Saturday filled with different events and having tons of fun...like always! To give you a little overview, our day went as follows:

3 pm- Student Club Performances
To be honest, we (Mary, Kristen, and I) showed up a little late to the performances and only got to see the end...I really wanted to hear the AcaBellas sing (my roommate Devan will be auditioning this week!) However, we still got to watch the Celtic Knights perform which was very cool! Want more info about clubs at SMC? Click here.

Hard to see, but there's the stage!

4 pm- T-shirt making
So obviously this wasn't a scheduled event, but basically everyone does it! What do I mean by "making t-shirts?" Well, for the highlighter dance, most students grab a white t-shirt and cut it/draw on it until it looks fabulous.

4:30 pm- Dinner on the 300's field
It was an absolutely GORGEOUS day, perfect for a dinner outside with live music and friends.

8 pm- Highlighter dance!!!
Basically, this was a dance where you can draw all over each other's shirts with highlighters and glow under the blacklight...so much fun!

So that's all for now, busy week ahead! Oh, and my birthday is on Wednesday...yay! :)

College Is For...Classes?

Hey everyone!

So yes, it's been a whole week since move-in day...crazy, right? I have some time before running off to my Media Revolutions class, so I thought I'd give you a little update...

College is AWESOME! Of course we have tons of fun (Ryan 2 is the best floor ever), but let's be real..college is about taking classes on topics we're interested in and learning new things to prepare us for the real world. Here's the deal - we can only take 4 classes per semester (5 if the fifth is a half-credit course) which means that we do have a LOT of free time..."study time." (For the most part...)

My schedule goes like this-

Monday/Wednesday/Friday-
The Examined Life
Intro to Philosophy
Elements of Calc

...and I'm done by 12!

Tuesday/Thursday-
Media Revolutions @1:10

...which means I have the whole morning free and the whole afternoon free after class.

Now, I know what you must be thinking - that's a ton of free time, what do you do to occupy it?

Well, I like to get my work done early in the afternoon on the day that it's assigned, that way I don't have to rush to get everything done the night before it's due. *TIP - managing your time is SO important, get your homework done early so you have the night to hang with friends!

Also, to stay organized, I keep a planner/agenda to write down all of my assignments and things to do, otherwise I know I'll forget...

Ok...I'm going to go do some homework (since I have the whole morning free) and then head off to Media Rev!
